Tips for a Healthy and Happy New Year

2019 is here! It’s time for a new beginning and a new positive mental outlook. Are you already overwhelmed by New Year’s Resolutions that tend to fade as the months go by? Try these small tips and tricks to jump start your new year without a huge commitment.

First, let’s talk about goals! Small manageable goals are easier to plan and achieve. If you complete goals more often, your positive attitude and outlook grows. Focus on setting a goal for the day or the week before setting long term goals. As you become more confident, continue to make daily or weekly goals while simultaneously planning bigger, long-term ones.

Get Moving. Exercise is the best gift you can give yourself in the new year, but you don’t have to make drastic changes to get active. Start off slow- stretch for 5-10 minutes in the morning, go for a walk during your lunch break, play music while you clean the house to convert chores into a dance party- you get the idea. As you get more comfortable, find fun ways to incorporate exercise into your life. You are much more likely to stick with something you enjoy, like going on a hike with friends, walking the dog with the whole family, or taking a relaxing restorative yoga class once a week.

Drink More Water. Drinking adequate water is essential for feeling your best! Water helps maintain a healthy balance of body fluids and electrolytes, and aids the liver and kidneys as they filter blood, detoxify, and remove waste. Carrying a water bottle with a time marker like this bottle or this bottle can help you keep track of your daily water intake.

Make a Healthy Snack Habit. Rather than go on a drastic fad diet, make small lifestyle habits that you are more likely to keep. A great habit to focus on in the new year is healthy snacking! We all snack – whether it’s salty, sweet, or savory is your preference – and choosing the right snack can make you feel physically and mentally better. Stock the fridge with veggie sticks (cut up carrots, cucumbers, peppers, etc.), hummus, Greek yogurt with granola, trail mix, seeds and nuts, whole wheat crackers, fresh fruit, and lightly salted popcorn to satisfy your snack fix.

Eat More Honey and Bee Pollen. Honey is a highly beneficial product made in our own back yard! Raw honey, the same kind that we harvest from our beehives and sell in our market, is unfiltered to keep the integrity of naturally occurring pollen and propolis. Honey is high in antioxidants and a great tool to help allergies and colds. Eating bee pollen (which are balls of pollen collected by bees that have been packed into a hard pellet) boosts your immune system, enhances energy, soothes skin, and helps prevent the onset of asthma. Honey is great in a cup of tea, a smoothie, or even on a sandwich with peanut butter and banana. Bee pollen has a granola-like consistency, great for topping yogurt.

A healthy and happy New Year is easier than you think! Remember to love yourself, stay positive, and set realistic goals that you can truly accomplish.
